Iao Valley Paintings (2005-2015)

Every semester, my ART 123D: Introduction to Oil Painting class goes on a painting excursion to Iao Valley, a lush and verdant state park, rich in Hawaiian history and culture. The natural beauty of Iao Valley has inspired many artists including Georgia 0"Keeffe, who painted the valley during her 1939 visit to Maui.

This field trip provides students an opportunity to experience and create a work en plein aire, using a painting knife and alla prima techniques. I also take advantage of the excursion to practice landscape painting, and over the years have built up a collection of works quite unlike anything else that I do.
